Market closes in negative

The BSE Benchmark index, Sensex opened positive at 19,707.59 and continued to trade firm in the morning trades. Later the index slipped into the negative and traded flat in the noon trades. Buying and selling activity was witnessed in pivotal stocks.

The Sensex further went down backed by profit booking to close in the negative terrain after touching a low of 19,482.34.

Select stocks from auto, metal and power gained while realty, IT and power stock led the declines.

BSE Sensex closed with a loss of 73.91 points, or 0.38%, at 19,529.50, while the broad-based NSE Nifty closed at 5858.35, down 6.65 points.

The BSE Midcap rose 1.60% while BSE Smallcap rose 1.58%.

Out of the total 2,864 stocks traded at the BSE, 1,934 advanced, 878 declined, while 52 remained unchanged.

Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE Consumer Durable gained 6.12%, BSE Auto rose 1.67%, BSE Metal rose 3.22% and BSE Power rose 0.54%, while BSE Realty declined 0.10%, BSE IT dipped 0.15% and BSE Bankex declined 0.63%.

Global Markets

Asian markets declined for the first time in four days on Tuesday (Dec. 04, 207) on concerns of US economy slowdown, the regions largest export market.

Movers and Shakers

Gainers at the BSE Sensex include Tata Steel, which rose 4.08% to close at Rs 872.95, followed by M&M which rose 2.79% to Rs 771.85, and BHEL rose 1.96% to end the day at Rs 2,815.40. Ambuja Cement, L&T, Hindalco, Infosys, Tata Motors, Wipro and ITC also moved up.

Laggards at the BSE Sensex were Reliance Industries, which declined 2.33% to close at Rs 2863.85, TCS declined 2.22% to Rs 1029.55 and ICICI Bank declined 2.13% to finish at Rs 1140.40.

Top Volumes

Ispat Industries topped the volume chart with 24,830,099 shares followed by Ashok Leyland with 19,946,152 shares and Chambal Fertilizers with 17,018,748 shares.

Top Turnover

Jindal Steel topped the turnover chart with Rs 4,710.8 million, followed by ONGC with Rs 2,427.2 million.
