harma company Merck reported a marginal rise in standalone net profit for the first quarter ended March 2008. During the quarter, the profit of the company rose 1.61% to Rs 161.87 million from Rs 159.31 million in the same quarter, previous year.
The company reported earnings of Rs 9.80 a share during the quarter, registering 3.70% growth over the corresponding quarter, previous year.
Net sales for the quarter rose 18.40% to Rs 833.63 million, while total income for the quarter rose 18.07% to Rs 942.01 million, when compared with the prior year period.
Merck has two major operating divisions - pharma and chemicals. Pharma business comprises of ethicals used in the treatment of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, consumer healthcare products and vitamins. Chemicals business comprises of bulk drugs and pigments.
Shares of the company gained Rs 7.4, or 2.22%, to trade at Rs 340.75. The total volume of shares traded was 2,461 at the BSE. (1.59 p.m., Wednesday)
