Railway freight earnings rise 11.05% for Apr.-Oct. `07

Railway freight earnings rose 11.05% to Rs 254.24 billion of revenue earnings for April-October 2007 as against Rs 228.95 billion in the corresponding month a year ago.

Railways carried 435.71 million tons of freight traffic during April-October 2007 as compared with 403.33 million tons carried during the corresponding period last year, reflecting an increase of 8.03 %.

The net ton kilometres (NTKM) went up to 5.34% to to 279,367 million during April-October 2007 as compared with 265,201 million for the same period a year ago.

For the month of October 2007, earnings from the freight increased 18.46% to Rs 39.76 billion as against Rs 33.57 billion in the corresponding period last year.

Railways carried 66.05 million tons of freight traffic during the month of October 2007 as compared to 58.76 million tons of freight traffic during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 12.41%. The net ton kilometres (NTKM) went up from 38,690 million during the month of October 2006 to 41804 million during October 2007, showing an increase of 8.05%.

Of the total earnings during the month of October 2007, Rs 14.62 billion came from transportation of 27.97 million tons of coal, followed by Rs 6.48 billion from 11.92 million tons of iron ore, Rs 3.68 billion from 6.93 million tons of cement, Rs 2.49 billion from 2.97 million tons of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL), Rs. 2.41 billion from 2.57 million tons of foodgrains, Rs. 2.55 billion from 2.41 million tons of iron & finished steel, Rs. 2.37 billion from 3.56 million tons of fertilizers, Rs. 0.64 billion from 0.97 million tons of raw material for steel plants except iron ore and Rs. 4.52 from 8.84 million tons of other goods.
