The 30-share benchmark index, Sensex fell further on the back of sustained selling pressure in heavyweights.
The Sensex is currently trading at 17,739.70, down 86.29 points, or 0.48%; while the broad based NSE Nifty is trading at 5,259.95, down 8.45 points (10.52 a.m.).
BSE Midcap index declined 0.41% and Smallcap index dipped 0.50%.
Out of the total 2,231 stocks traded at the BSE, 800 advanced, 1,359 declined while 72 remained unchanged.
Among the sectoral indices, BSE Bankex rose 1.06%, Metal moved up 0.31%, while Realty fell 1.19% and BSE Power declined 1.09%.
Gainers at the BSE Sensex were Hindalco, which surged 3.14% to Rs 202.10, Cipla rose 1.51% to Rs 204.60 and Ranbaxy rose 0.96% to Rs 440.55. Grasim, Satyam, HDFC Bank, HDFC, M&M, HUL, ONGC and TCS also rose.
Laggards at the BSE Sensex include Ambuja Cement, which declined 2.36% to Rs 120.00, RIL and BHEL fell over 1% each to Rs 2,540.00 and Rs 801.40 respectively. REL, DLF, NTPC, ICICI Bank, Infosys, BHEL and Bajaj Auto also slipped.
